Performance Team Information Packet

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you for your interest in our Performance Teams!  We are entering our fourth year with our Dancers’ Studio Performance Team, and are very excited to get going again!  This past year our studio team consisted of two separate groups, focusing on the areas of dance and musical theater.  By offering this variety to our students, we have opened the doors for our students to expand their training in the performing arts, and become well-rounded performers.  Cheri and Paul, team directors, are both looking forward to working with so many talented young people in both areas of dance and musical theater!

Our goal for our team dancers, singers  and actors is for each performer to develop excellent performance skills by being given opportunities to perform all year long.  The last three years, our fabulous performers danced and sang around town all year, and earned high scores and honors at competitions and conventions.  We are extremely proud of them!  Our team placed 2nd for Top Studio at Nationals in Las Vegas last month!  We look forward to another great year with our 2010-2011 Performance Teams!

We will be holding auditions for our Performance Teams on Saturday, September 11, at 10:00am for dancers, and by appointment only for the musical theater auditioners.  The studio will be available 30 minutes before auditions for warm up.  If you are not able to attend auditions, please arrange a private audition with Cheri or Paul in advance.  Our Performance Team list will be posted no later than Monday, September 13, on our studio website.  All team members will also receive an email with placement information and details.  All parents and students who are participating in our Performance Teams will be asked to attend a parent/student meeting on Friday, September 17, at 6:30pm, to discuss details of the upcoming year, and so we can answer any questions you may have.  We will hold our first Performance Team Rehearsal Class on Saturday, September 18, as scheduled (See 2010-2011 Schedule of Classes).

From September thru July, Our dance star team will rehearse on Saturday mornings from 9:00am-12:00pm  Some extra rehearsals will be scheduled as we get close to competition on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.   Our musical theater team will rehearse on Saturdays from 1:30pm-4:30pm.  Some weeks rehearsal may run longer than scheduled, and you will be given notice of any extended rehearsals.  Students can participate in both teams.

Each year we strive to make changes and improvements to our program, and find ways to help students build their technical skills to a level which will be competitive, as well as make the most of rehearsal time.  We have made a few changes this year to our requirements for the team, all of which we believe will help us to strengthen our performers in the areas which have not previously been our strengths as a team.  Please see the requirements listed in this packet for a breakdown of class requirements.

Each student will have his or her own individual account kept throughout the year.  All students who are participating in our Performance Teams will be required to place a $100.00 payment toward his/her own individual account at the meeting on September 17.  This is in addition to tuition.  Warm-ups and costumes will be ordered immediately, so that we will be prepared for performances as soon as possible.  Each student will be required to make a payment toward his/her account each month at the time tuition is due, unless he/she has fund-raised the necessary amount or more that particular month.  Payments for students who are on either the dance or musical theater team shall pay $50.00 per month toward his/her account.  Students who are participating in both the dance and musical theater teams shall pay $100.00 per month toward his/her account.  All money in student accounts goes toward costumes and fees.  Some months may require additional payments if there is not enough money in a student’s account to cover what is owed

Required Classes: In order to join our teams, you must be enrolled in a minimum number of classes at The Dancers’ Studio each month from September, 2010, thru July, 2011.  Please see our studio price sheet for more details on our class prices.  Performance Team classes count as one regular class when calculating tuition (if participating in both teams, team classes count as 2, one for dance and one for musical theater).  Students who are taking unlimited classes do not need to pay additional tuition for teams.  A breakdown of requirements to participate in our Performance Teams is listed below:

Dance Star Team Only:  Classes per week each- Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Turns and Leaps, Acting for Dancers, Star Team Rehearsal Class (Optional: Tap Routine- You do not pay for an extra class for the tap rehearsal, but you must be enrolled in a tap class to be in the Tap Routine.)  This totals 7 classes per week minimum, not including tap.

Additional Info: Students who wish to perform with a dance solo, any style, will need to schedule a private lesson with one of our instructors.

Musical Theater Team Only:  Classes per week- Dance for Actors, Team Rehearsal Class.  This totals 2 classes per week, per month, minimum.  Additional dance classes are always recommended for the Musical Theater Team members.

Additional Info: Students who wish to compete/perform with a monologue will need to schedule private lesson time with Mr. Paul to work on your piece.  The age minimum for the Musical Theater team is 13.  Any students age 11-12 may contact Paul to discuss the possibility of auditioning to participate in large musical theater group numbers (not all main group numbers), with the same requirements for classes, as listed above.  We are accepting names for an interest list in a younger Musical Theater group, which would rehearse simultaneously with the older team with Miss Cheri.  We will not create this younger team until we have enough interest to have a group.  If you are interested in this younger team, please sign up before auditions and we will contact you with information regarding the younger team.

Both Dance and Musical Theater Teams:  Classes per week- All dance requirements listed above (except for Dance for Actors), Musical Theater Team Rehearsal Class.

Solos, Duos, Trios: You must be on a performance team to perform and compete with a solo, duo or trio, and must be enrolled in a private lesson to work on that particular dance, song or monologue.  Students who are on the performance team may compete and perform a routine in the areas of ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop, tap, voice, monologue, or song and dance.  Students who are on only one of the teams may compete in any area, but each routine must be approved by the instructor in his/her private lesson (for example, a dance team member may compete with a vocal solo if she/he is enrolled in a private voice lesson, and is approved by the instructor).  All solo/duo/trio performers must be a part of a team to perform and compete, and must be enrolled in a private lesson to do so.  Multiple solos/duos/trios can be prepared in one private lesson time slot, but must be arranged and agreed upon by student, parent and instructor, as we want all performance pieces to be well rehearsed, clean and prepared.

A note regarding ballet/gymnastics classes (for dance team members):  As you may know, ballet technique is the basis for all other styles of dance, as it strengthens your core and body alignment, as well as improves flexibility and overall strength.  We only require 1 ballet class to be taken to participate in the dance star team, however, we recommend as much ballet as possible.  Gymnastics can also be a great asset to a dancer, as tricks/tumbling often can add to a dancer’s score in competition.  We recommend our gymnastics classes as well, although they are not required.

Routine Placement: After auditions, the directors will be placing each performer in the routines/songs he or she will be working on and performing throughout the year.  Without having had auditions, we could not possibly predict exactly how the routines will be divided, other than the following basic information:  For the Dance Star Team, each dancer will be considered for placement in a jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip hop and production number, with an option to be in a tap routine.  For the Musical Theater Team, students will be placed in a minimum of 2 group numbers as well as a production number.  The production number will consist of the Dance and Musical Theater teams together.  We will likely add an additional Muiscal Theater number or two later in the season. All students will be a part of one large team, but divided into different groups for each routine.  While different people will be in different numbers, we want to encourage teamwork and support of our entire team, regardless of which numbers a person will be participating in.  All solos, duos, trios and small group numbers must be arranged with the team directors.

Please be aware that this is only an estimate; costs may be lower or higher, and this is the approximate cost for the full year.  This cost breakdown does not include tuition for the year, just performance team costs, and does not include spending money at any of the events.  This also does not include additional cost for solos, duos, trios for competition costs.  This is just the base number for being on the team in the group numbers.  We do not want to throw any surprises at you; we want you to know exactly what you are committing to for the year, so please be sure that you are comfortable with the financial commitment before auditioning.  If you would like a more accurate total for the entire year, please include your monthly tuition and private lesson costs (each person’s will vary, based on the number of classes/private lessons you take), and any additional travel expenses you may incur from taking vacation in Las Vegas.  Please also add additional cost for solo/duo/trio competition fees.

Fund-Raising: In these difficult economic times, we are all looking for ways to make extra money to help us pay for extra-curricular activities.  We will be offering multiple fund-raising opportunities for you to help offset the cost of fees, costumes, etc, and will provide you with a sponsorship letter you may distribute if you choose.  More information on fund-raising will be distributed after auditions.
